Consider Nov. 5 Take Your Kids to Vote Day. A nonpartisan program starting this year in Cobb County, Marietta and some private schools, aims to educate the young on the importance and impact of casting ballots. Kids Voting Cobb is an affiliate of a nationwide program that has resulted in a 5

percent voter turnout increase in communities where it has taken effect. “They found that the kids get excited about it and show the parents the materials,” Kids Voting Cobb spokeswoman Debbie Abernathy said. “They encourage their parents to come out and vote.”

Kids Voting organizers provided “Civics Alive” materials to teachers, K-12, who will incorporate it into their normal civics curriculum, Abernathy said. In turn, Kids Voting hopes to have special locations at every county precinct location on Election Day where the kids can cast ballots of their own from 2-7 p.m.

With the help of volunteers to run the locations and donated materials, Abernathy believes it can happen. The organization wants to gather patriotic displays at the kids’ locations to make a visual, as well as emotional, impact. The education, though, is the important part. The program is designed to “reemphasize the privilege of voting” and will bring the kids back to the voting booth when they are adults, Abernathy said.
