Flying Eye Hospital Plane Arrives First for World's Largest Air Show in Dayton

The world-traveling ORBIS DC-10 Flying Eye Hospital has landed for the 2003 Vectren Dayton Air Show presented by Kroger at Dayton International Airport, July 17-20.

ORBIS, the nonprofit organization that works to preserve and restore sight in the developing world, selected Dayton as one of two stops to celebrate flight's centennial and share its work with a U.S. audience - restoring or preserving sight for more than 130,000 people in developing countries since 1982.

The $15 million conversion of the DC-10 on display at the Air Show took two years and began its first program in China in 1994. Before construction, a full-scale mock-up of the interior was created to review the layout's human ergonomics and a medical team conducted a day of mock surgeries on the DC-10 to determine the design and modifications necessary for the plane's final version.

ORBIS was formed by philanthropists concerned that 180 million people in the world are blind or visually impaired. Of these millions, 80 percent is either treatable or preventable when existing eye care resources are available. In addition to the thousands directly treated by ORBIS doctors, over 530 ORBIS programs in 81 countries have enhanced the skills of 63,000 health professionals. To date, 17.5 million people have been impacted by ORBIS' training programs.

Visitors to the Air Show can tour the world's only flying eye hospital complete with a classroom, audio-visual, editing, laser/examination, operating, sub-sterile, scrub and recovery rooms as well as communication, training and maintenance centers.

To attend this once-in-a-lifetime Air Show, simply purchase tickets for July 17-20 for the 2003 Vectren Dayton Air Show presented by Kroger. Fans can purchase general admission tickets for $19 in advance and $21 at the gate for adults. General admission tickets for children ages 6-11 and seniors over 60 are $14 in advance and $16 at the gate. General admission is free for children 5 and under. A general admission wristband is available for $50 for admission all four days. General admission patrons can bring lawn chairs or blankets to sit and watch the show.

Tickets are currently available at Dayton- and Cincinnati-area Kroger stores for $1 off the advance price with your Kroger Plus card and at the U.S. Air Force Museum. For more information, call (937) 898-5901.
