BT Broadcast Services to Bring Weekend Coverage Of Wimbledon to the US

The live broadcasting of Wimbledon to millions of people across the US is possible thanks to an exclusive deal announced today between US broadcaster NBC and BT Broadcast Services, the Americas Inc.

BT Broadcast Services' technology allows NBC to transmit Wimbledon footage to New York via BT's transatlantic fibre network called i-View. From New York the matches and match highlights are uplinked and broadcast across the States.

Bill McNamara, general manager for BT Broadcast Services, the Americas says: "Tennis fans across the US can enjoy high quality footage of Wimbledon during the tournament.

"We simply give the broadcasters the ability to transport their coverage to anywhere in the world via a digital switch from New York, enhancing the coverage and allowing for high definition TV (HDTV). With this contract NBC is delivering live coverage to a potential audience of millions."

BT Broadcast Services is also providing an off-air confidence feed which allows NBC to monitor the transmission services live from their headquarters. And the i-View network is supported by E1 fiber used for data and video transport services. This means that NBC customers can stay up to date on match statistics and highlights.

John Ruane, NBC sports manager says: "We will be focusing on the weekend coverage of Wimbledon bringing millions of fans the opportunity to catch the key matches and all the highlights from the week's events. As Andy Roddick is tipped for the title, all eyes will be glued to the screen during the final on Sunday the 6th of July."
