EAST OF EDEN Debuts at #1 on New York Times Bestseller List

Penguin Books is pleased to announce EAST OF EDEN by John Steinbeck, the book that brought Oprah's Book Club back, will be #1 on the New York Times Bestseller list for July 6, 2003.

EAST OF EDEN has gone back to press five times since June 18, when Oprah Winfrey announced it was the book she chose to re-launch her Book Club. To date there are 1,175,000 copies in print.

EAST OF EDEN has outperformed past Oprah's Book Club selections for Penguin. According to Norman Lidofsky, President of Paperback Sales, "The cash register sales are higher than any other Oprah pick we have had. We are seeing tremendous velocity in sales and are rushing to fill the demand."

Lisa Halliday, Chief of Communications for Harpo Productions, has also seen an increase in Oprah.com web traffic. "To date we have had over 125,000 people officially sign-up for the Book Club. Within just one week of the announcement, 1.1 million people have visited the site, which typically averages 2 million visitors in an entire month."
