'Cinema Canada' Portrays Chinese Canadian Life From Whimsical, Humanistic Perspective

This year's "Cinema Canada" presentation, "Long Life, Happiness and Prosperity," will give metro Detroiters an entertaining, insightful glimpse at contemporary Chinese Canadian life. And as is traditional for this annual event, admission is free.

With her enchanting and humorous third feature, director Mina Shum continues to portray contemporary Chinese Canadian life from a whimsical, humanistic perspective. Interweaving tales of three endearing families, "Long Life, Happiness and Prosperity" uses magical realism to explore the themes of harnessing faith and finding acceptance during rocky times. Mindy Ho, an eccentric, strong-minded 12-year-old, stages Taoist magical experiments to save her harried single mother from financial and romantic ruin.

Her misdirected charms appear to cause an aging security guard to lose his job and a local butcher to win the lottery, ultimately forcing each man to face his worst fears. As magic gradually enlivens Mindy's mother's drab existence, we can only speculate whether Mindy's spells, her monumental sense of purpose, or simply life's mysterious logic is at work.

"Long Life, Happiness and Prosperity" had its world premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival and its U.S. premiere at the Sundance Film Festival. The film is distributed in the U.S. by Film Movement, a first-of- its-kind movie club for new releases of independent and foreign films.

Cinema Canada's special guest will be the film's executive producer, Christina Jennings, of Toronto's Shaftesbury Films. Ms. Jennings will introduce "Long Life, Happiness and Prosperity" and answer questions following the screening.

"Long Life, Happiness and Prosperity" will be screened on Monday evening, July 7 at 7:00 p.m. at the Detroit Institute of Arts, 5200 Woodward Avenue (John R. Theatre entrance). Admission is free.

"Cinema Canada" is presented annually by the Consulate General of Canada and the Detroit Film Theatre at The Detroit Institute of Arts, in celebration of Canada Day and U.S. Independence Day.
