Composer John Williams To Be Honored at the U.S. Capitol's 4th of July Gala

On Friday, July 4th, Oscar, Grammy, Golden Globe and Emmy award winning composer John Williams will be honored at America's biggest birthday party -- A Capitol Fourth 2003, a brilliant evening of musical entertainment taking place on the grounds of the U.S. capitol at the Washington Monument.

Erich Kunzel (the musical director of the Indianapolis Symphony Pops, pops music advisor of the Detroit Symphony Orchestra and principle pops conductor of the Naples Philharmonic), will lead the National Symphony Orchestra in a 20- miniute selection of some of Williams' most notable film scores, including "E.T. The Extra-Terrestrial," "Star Wars" and "Schindler's List." In addition, Williams will take the stage and conduct his "Olympic Fanfare and Theme" from 1984. The event airs live on PBS from the West Lawn of the U.S. Capitol on Friday, July 4, 2003 from 8:00 to 9:30 p.m. ET.

The following week (July 12th), Williams will conduct the President's Own United States Marine Band at their 205th Anniversary Concert taking place at the Kennedy Center Performing Arts Concert Hall.

The program will be comprised entirely of Williams' music and will include selections from his scores from "Raiders of the Lost Ark," "E.T. The Extra-Terrestrial," "Schindler's List," "JFK" and "Catch Me If you Can," among others. This concert represents the first time Williams has adapted and performed so many of his great film works for a professional level concert band.

Williams has composed the music and served as a music director for more than 100 films, 21 of which have been with long time collaborator Steven Spielberg, and holds the record for being the most Oscar nominated person alive with 42 nominations (he's won the Oscar 5 times in addition to 18 Grammy awards).

Not only is his work well known on movie blockbusters like "Jurassic Park," the "Indiana Jones" and "Star Wars" trilogies, but his more subtle and introspective scores (including his Oscar winning work on "Schindler's List," "Amistad," "Saving Private Ryan" and "Angela's Ashes") reflect his virtuoso talents as a consummate composer, conductor, and musician.

Future engagements for Williams include a concert at the Mann Center with the Philadelphia Orchestra on July 15th; two engagements at Tanglewood, the first on August 2nd, where he will conduct the Boston POPS with Josh Groban as the special guest and on August 16th, the Boston Symphony Orchestra, with a special appearance by Yo-Yo Ma.

On August 29th and 30th, Williams will conduct the Los Angeles Philharmonic at the Hollywood Bowl, and on October 25th, Williams will take part in the history making opening galas (23rd-25th) for the Walt Disney Concert Hall where he will conduct (along side Esa-Pekka Salonen) a rich history of symphonic music in cinema.
